PICKING OUT KITCHEN CABINETS THAT REFLECT YOUR STYLE AND FIT YOUR NEEDS
Picking out kitchen cabinets for your new home is a key home building decision. The kitchen which is generally the heart of the home should reflect your personal style and set the tone for the rest of the home. When picking out a kitchen cabinet, you will not only pick out the style but the hardware, finish, and wood. In addition to standard upper and base cabinets, you may want to customize your kitchen with these types of cabinet accessories:

Choosing a Kitchen Cabinet Style for Today and Tomorrow

Kitchens have transformed through the decades. In the 50s, kitchens were U-shaped, and the sink, range, and refrigerator were placed in the center with the cabinets constructed of painted steel. 1960 kitchen cabinets moved away from steel into wooden ones, which further continued into the 70s with kitchens boasting dark wood cabinets to complement the kitchen’s brown, gold, and avocado tones. And, the highlight of the 80s was a white-laminate cabinet with light-toned wooden band.

Today’s kitchens typically feature an “open concept” with cabinet styles varying in style and color, including natural wood, greens, two-toned cabinets, reclaimed wood, gray, and baby blue cabinets. Since kitchen cabinets are one of the biggest investments in a home, you need to choose carefully so the cabinet style works for today and for tomorrow. There are several cabinet styles to choose from with the list below highlighting the most popular choices:

Contemporary
Just as the name implies, contemporary cabinets feature a sleek minimalist design, providing a streamlined clean look. Contemporary cabinets have flat surfaces and nominal ornamentation and simple hardware. This cabinet style will not have any crown molding or raised panels. Because the cabinets do not have any molding, the cabinets are generally taller, providing more storage space. Contemporary cabinets are ideal for small kitchens such as galley kitchens.

Modern
Modern kitchen cabinets are similar to contemporary cabinets but feature more of an angular design. They are often constructed of man-made materials such as metal, plastic, concrete, and glass and can incorporate frosted glass panes.

Rustic
Rustic kitchens like country kitchens exude a casual, warm feeling and are meant for cooking and entertaining. The cabinets are usually made with durable materials such as pine or oak woods. Pine is a popular choice because the wood shows natural and visible knots and graining; however, because the wood is soft, it is prone to scratching and denting. Cherry, oak, maple, and hickory are also widely used due to their durability.

Country
Country kitchens like rustic kitchens are meant to be fully utilized, so cabinets are constructed with a durable wood such as pine, cherry, oak, maple, or hickory. Often country cabinets are painted in warm colors, including yellow, cream, light green, and blue. Raised-panel doors, beadboard, and doors with glass are also common features in country cabinets.

French Country
Just like rustic and country-style cabinets, French-country cabinets exude charm and warmth. The cabinets often feature ornate carvings and furniture-like features such as decorative moldings and detailed arches. These cabinets are made of wood and can be in natural tones or antiqued or distressed to further reflect cozy comfort. Ornate hardware made from antique brass, bronze or iron are commonly paired with French country cabinets.

Shaker
Like contemporary and modern, Shaker style cabinets maintain a simple yet functional façade. Shaker cabinets feature flat paneled doors with rail frames and are well constructed generally with materials such as cherry, maple, hickory, or oak. This style cabinet can be left with their natural wood finish or painted in light colors such as white or gray. Shaker cabinets are installed in more modern kitchens and paired with stainless steel appliances and light-colored granite.

Mission
Mission-style cabinets include straight lines and panel-faced doors with no decorative features and are generally constructed of oak or cherry woods. One of the appealing aspects of mission-style cabinets is that the cabinets are usually made by skilled carpenters. And, because of this, they can be extremely durable as well as costly. Mission cabinets are generally not painted but rather stained to showcase the wood’s natural beauty. These cabinets are often seen paired with black decorative hardware made from wrought iron, brass, or bronze metal.

Retro
In the retro category, mid-century modern design has shaped the look of retro kitchen cabinets. Mid-century design features streamlined, angular lines and geometric shapes, making the cabinets sleek and seamless with minimal decoration. Another design style that has influenced the retro kitchen is the post-war 1950s style, featuring sharp angles, overstated curves, and high-tech design elements. Cabinet colors are usually done in bold colors such as red, blue, or green and finished in a high-gloss finish with chrome hardware.

Tuscan
Tuscan kitchen cabinets feature cherry or maple woods that are stained rich brown colors. Doors can have raised panels and decorative accents such as hoods, shelves, and cornices. Ornate iron, bronze, copper, and brass metals commonly complement the cabinets. Corner cabinets with glass doors and cabinet underlighting are other features that further accent the Tuscan look and vibe.

Craftsman
Craftsman kitchen cabinets have simple straight lines with minimal detailing. They are often constructed of heavy woods such as oak, hickory, cherry, or maple and generally never made of artificial materials. Just like mission-style cabinets, craftsman-style cabinets are crafted by custom cabinetmakers, so cabinet costs can be higher than other style cabinets.
